Free Transportation Resources Available for Seniors and People with Special Needs

New York has some attractive options for community-based transportation for the elderly and disabled. In Manhattan, the Community Arranged Resident Transportation Program (C.A.R.T.) gives eligible seniors free transportation to help them go to doctor appointments, senior centers, and visit relatives five days a week. The program has five vans and a private car service funded by the city’s Department for the Aging. Also, the ARC XVI Fort Washington Inc. WHIST Program provides free transportation as do other programs throughout Brooklyn and the Bronx.

The state also offers 24 months of unlimited bus passes for free to residents of the Capitol Region who have bought a home through the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) Home of Your Own Program. Parents, guardians, and caregivers who help people with disabilities or mental illness are also eligible. The “Homeowner’s Transit Use Incentive Program” provides the CDTA bus passes and travel training assistance. The OPWDD helps home buyers with disabilities and mental illness with down payments, closing costs, and small home repairs and encourages home buying through a low interest, fixed rate mortgage.

New York law firm Littman Krooks LLP excels in helping the elderly and people with special needs get access to transportation resources, government benefits, and plan for future care.
