Nicole Garcia, assistant to managing partner Bernard A. Krooks, has translated her professional interest in elder care, special needs, and education into community commitment. A nine-year member of her local PTA’s executive board, she is about to complete graduate work in special education at Mercy College.
“I do a lot of work for the PTA that involves inviting in experts who can talk to parents about the issues that matter to them,” she explains. “I’m pretty much a fixture at school events.” And while she admits that Littman Krooks’s focus on special needs planning and special education advocacy has influenced her, she explains that she has “always been fascinated” by issues related to special needs.
She also strongly believes in the work of such organizations as the Alzheimer’s Association and C.O.M.E. (Caregivers Outreach Ministry Empwerment), which provides emotional support and practical advice to those caring for seniors and individuals with special needs. “Family caregivers can so easily burn out,” she explains. “They provide an invaluable social service but are frequently unrecognized.”
Born and raised in Yonkers, she actively seeks to bring more sports into the community through her work with the Yonkers Boys and Girls Club. “We’re a sports family,” she explains. Thirteen-year-old Tyena is a volleyball and softball player, as well as a cheerleader, while nine-year-old Jason is immersed in soccer, basketball, and baseball. “My husband Victor is into ‘every sport,’ and the kids are quickly following in his footsteps.”
Nicole has been with Littman Krooks for over nine years, and during that time, has also held positions in billing and marketing. She joined the firm after receiving an undergraduate degree in legal studies from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and working briefly for another law firm in White Plains.
