Shennelle Morant Joins Firm as Intern

Shennelle Morant recently joined our Manhattan office as part of a year-long work/study internship, sponsored by nonprofit Mountbatten Institute in partnership with St. Mary’s University, London. Although she’s helping out as receptionist, more importantly, she’s absorbing practical knowledge concerning corporate/securities law, elder law, estate and special needs planning.

She’s also taking business courses at Mountbatten Institute’s New York City offices. Mountbatten fosters worldwide educational and business links, practical and theoretical business training, and cultural understanding.

“In our global economy and culture, it’s important to stay current with other countries’ viewpoints,” explains founding partner Mitchell Littman.  “London and New York City, in particular, are close sister international cities and Shennelle is a great asset to better understand where our differences and similarities lie culturally and, specifically, in the legal profession.”

Shennelle decided that an internship abroad would be the best way to gain experience in a cosmopolitan setting such as New York at the same time that she was enhancing her professional skills. “The current job market is tough,” she explains. “I needed something to make me stand out from the crowd. I’m really excited about working alongside the highly regarded professionals here at Littman Krooks.”

Shennelle earned a B.A. with honors in law with accountancy from the University of Brighton, after which she completed the Legal Practice Course at London’s Inns of Court School of Law.  She is currently working towards a post-graduate certificate in international business practice through St. Mary’s.

She has worked part-time throughout her academic career. “I believe working whilst at university enhanced many transferable skills and also really helped me to plan my time better whilst studying,” she notes.

After obtaining her undergraduate degree, Shennelle had originally planned to work briefly in order to save for a few months of international travel before continuing with her career.  The weak economic climate interfered, however, so she accepted a month-long internship at the firm of AP Law, in London. The manager of the criminal law practice was impressed by her work ethic and believed that she would fit in well within his team. While there, she managed student internships, fielding inquiries, interviewing candidates, then supporting and monitoring interns onsite. The interns ranged from 15-year-olds to law graduates. “My responsibilities sometimes required enormous patience,” she admits, “but meeting people with a common interest and being able to share knowledge and experiences was very rewarding.” It was that experience that convinced her that she should continue her study of the law.

Shennelle describes the coming year as an exhilarating journey. “I have fallen in love with New York.  It’s not dissimilar to London, there is so much to see and do – it is a very exciting time for me”.
