Updates to New IDEA Website

Published March 13, 2018

by Arshi Pal, Esq., Littman Krooks LLP

Beginning April 30, 2018, the United States Department of Education has announced that the original Building the Legacy: IDEA 2004 website from 2004 will no longer be active. However, parents should not panic. Instead, any individual who visits the website will be redirected to the new Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) website. The Department of Education  has explained that the original “Building the Legacy” website was created in 2006 after the reauthorization of the IDEA in 2004.   However, the Department had not  updated it since 2013 and some of the information is outdated.  Indeed, the website crashed last year and, as a result, the new IDEA website was created.  The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) resolved the issued with the old site and kept the new IDEA site running also to allow stakeholders to provide comments.  OSERS states that the new website will provide updated information regarding the IDEA and have a section regarding the legacy of the Act.  The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) is currently taking feedback on the website through its blog.

Although the IDEA websites are a valuable resource, the intricacies of the IDEA require meticulous attention. If you believe your rights granted to you child under the IDEA have been violated,  contact an experienced special education law attorney today.
